National Grid is hiring a Lead Software Engineer- This position is based in Warwick however we offer flexible hybrid working options. You will also have the opportunity to work from our co-working space in London or Bristol.
Job Purpose
This is a fantastic opportunity for a skilled and forward thinking Technical Lead to play a key role in designing, building and managing cutting-edge cloud based software platforms. Youʼll do this by collaborating closely with other software engineers, product owners, product designers, technical leads and senior engineering manager to create suitable solutions that transform the organisation, which also align to our engineering and architecture standards. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, enjoys solving complex technical challenges, define & enhancing standards and is passionate about delivering high quality, reliable software solutions. You will also be able to lead technical discussion and mentor members of the team.
What You'll Do
- Design and implement scalable, high performance software solutions using deep knowledge of C# and .NET Core, ensuring alignment with long-term business objectives while developing clean, well-structured, and efficient code that is easy to test and maintain.
- Enhance the performance and reliability of distributed systems to guarantee optimal uptime and operational efficiency, while automating configuration, provisioning, and deployment processes to minimise manual intervention.
- Establish and enforce robust security measures, ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards.
- Advocate for and guide the team Agile and Lean methodologies to foster continuous improvement and deliver value rapidly and iteratively.
- Provide support, mentorship, and line management for engineers across the team.
- Collaborating effectively with both business and technical stakeholders throughout the product development lifecycle.
- Have a leading contribution to the engineering and architecture standards, procedures, and processes to enhance team efficiency.
- Lead and participate in code reviews and quality assurance activities.
- Document and maintain comprehensive software functionality to support knowledge sharing and operational continuity
About You
- Deep experience in C# and .NET Core, with a solid understanding of backend development principles.
- Experience with microservice and event-driven architectures alongside RESTful APIs.
- Worked with Azure cloud services including Azure Entra and general authentication/authorisation practices.
- Deep skills in containerisation, automation, and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker). Experience with React is ideal but not required.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices including Infrastructure As Code (IaC) and observability such as metrics, monitoring, traces and alerting.
- Test-first mindset and able to lead other engineers on what good looks like regarding unit/integration testing, end-to-end (E2E) testing and contract testing with libraries and frameworks such as XUnit, Playwright and PACT.
- Deep experience with Lean software development methodologies (e.g., Agile, SAFe).
- Good knowledge of security frameworks and compliance standards (ISO 27001, GDPR).
- Deep analytical mindset, problem-solving skills with a proven ability to troubleshoot complex issues and deliver fast, effective solutions, in a face paced environment.
- Creative thinker who tackles challenges with energy and innovation, and is a clear communicator, able to collaborate across teams and explain technical concepts with ease.
