Substation Control Design Assurance Engineer
As the Lead Transmission Engineer, you’ll be part of one of the most exciting periods of change ever in the history of the energy landscape, and at the forefront of an engineering transformation and challenge that will ensure a secure, affordable and reliable Net Zero Energy System. You’ll join the National Grid’s Asset Engineering Assurance Control Team who are responsible for the implementation of highly technical operational technology systems for National Grid Electricity Transmission. We make happen the solutions that will enable a radically different Energy system and electricity network to meet the challenges of the future.
Your key outputs are to lead on the delivery of the specification, design, implementation and lifetime management of transmission network operational technology assets and the associated cyber security. Cultivate effective communication skills, including the ability to engage with multi-disciplined teams and audiences. Building and maintaining relationships internally and externally with key stakeholders.
This role is based out of one of our National Grid offices, and we’d hope to see you at least two days per week but you’re welcome to be in the office more often if that would work best for you. We’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!
What You'll Do
- Provide design assurance on a risk-based approach - via stage-by-stage confirmation – that projects can proceed to the next stage and to eventual commercial service, and provide design, obsolescence and commissioning advice / assurance as appropriate
- Discharge the role of Designer (on strategic and complex projects) through the provision of cross technology leadership and coordination over several functions and in line with National Grid procedural requirements
- Authorised to discharge the role of Commissioning Officer (P&C & Cyber schemes)
- Technically manage external contracts, contractor and stakeholder relationships and direct framework consultants, to drive consistency and ‘value engineering’, working in partnership with wider NG teams as appropriate
- Provide technical support and work in partnership with the ET Type Registration and Innovation processes and Global Procurement specialists for tender and support contract activities.
- Lead and coordinate technical investigations within scope of competency and progress to completion subsequent engineering investigations
What You'll Have
- Experience and knowledge on design, implementation, extension and lifetime management of Substation Control Systems.
- Experience working with Electricity Utilities (Electricity Generation, Transmission, Distribution), strong understanding of utility operational technology application procedures and a working knowledge of their test, design assurance, commissioning process and lifetime support.
- Understanding of communication protocols such as IEC61850 and IEC60870-5-101/104, including experience working in situations with sites communicating with a National or Regional Control Centres.
- Strong knowledge and understanding on L2/L3 Network architecture and cyber security requirements associated with Substation Control Systems.
- Demonstrable knowledge of successful project delivery. Experienced in building and maintain relationships internally and externally with key stakeholders. Experienced in effective communication skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations to multi disciplined teams / audiences.
