Job Purpose

The Senior Enironmental Scientist will be responsible for managing National Grid’s environmental compliance, licensing and permitting activities for operations and capital projects to ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal environmental requirements. This includes ensuring applicable local, state, and federal environmental requirements are reviewed, communicated and implemented for high value, complex activities, including project initiation, design and construction. 

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide overall support to the department and project teams to ensure timely preparation of acceptable environmental license and permit application material and completion of implementation and compliance activities.
  • Procure required regulatory permits either individually or using external consulting firms.  Permits may include NYSDEC Freshwater and Tidal Wetlands, Federal wetlands and waterways, and various local Town permits.  Manage and coordinate the work of external consultants in these efforts.
  • Provide technical support for managing data and documents pertinent to stakeholder communication, project schedules, environmental issues, studies and expenditures.
  • Successfully manage project permitting.
  • Effectively communicate with peers and regulators.

  • Ability to review gas, power generation, marine construction and facility capital projects to evaluate potential impacts on the environment and to determine the need for regulatory permits and/or authorizations.
  • Coordinate with internal and external resources on development of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP’s) and NYSDEC and NYCDEP stormwater permits.  Ensure compliance with stormwater permits.
  • Serve as the Downstate point of contact for avian and other wildlife interactions; providing notification to and procuring approvals from regulatory agencies for activities with the potential to impact rare, threatened and endangered species.
  • Provide support to National Grid’s field operations, including project site visits across the Downstate territory, to monitor and facilitate compliance with applicable local, state, federal and company requirements.
  • Develop and maintain close working relationships with Operations, Engineering, Construction and other personnel to share best practices and communicate business decisions.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge regarding current and proposed federal, state and local regulations and National Grid’s Environmental Procedures to ensure National Grid is compliant with environmental legislation and regulations.
  • Train and motivate personnel from various company departments to comply with all applicable federal, state and local environmental regulations, and National Grid’s Environmental Procedures. This includes providing technical guidance, support and coaching to share knowledge and develop technical understanding of environmental requirements.
  • Research and keep informed of pertinent information and developments in areas such as NYSPSC Article VII, Article X, State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA).
  • Prepare and/or manage the preparation of SEQRA assessment forms in support of capital projects and proposed property transactions.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Biology, Environmental Engineering/Science, Environmental Planning, etc.) and relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant industry practices, standards and legislation. Knowledge of current trends within the utility industry and developments in legislation or regulation.
  • 5-10 years related environmental experience.
  • Extensive and significant knowledge of environmental licensing and permitting regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of New York State regulations preferred.

Salary: $111,000 - $130,000
