National Grid is hiring a Lead Electrical Designer. This role is located in our Hicksville, NY location. 

Job Purpose

We are seeking a Lead Electrical Designer to support power generation and related facilities by developing high-quality electrical power and control designs for modifications and upgrades to existing assets. This role interfaces closely with engineering, plant operations, maintenance, and construction teams to ensure designs are safe, compliant, constructible, and aligned with National Grid Asset Management requirements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop electrical power and control system design drawings and supporting calculations for power generation, substations, transmission, and gas facilities.
  • Conduct field assessments to evaluate existing conditions and support accurate, constructible designs.
  • Ensure all designs comply with National Grid Asset Management requirements, applicable codes, and engineering standards.
  • Review and approve vendor, consultant, and shop drawings.
  • Select electrical and control materials and prepare material takeoffs.
  • Assemble complete construction design packages.
  • Coordinate design activities with electrical, controls, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Provide technical guidance to plant personnel, maintenance organizations, and installation contractors.
  • Prepare labor-hour and cost estimates; analyze and communicate variances to stakeholders.
  • Support commissioning activities and assist in resolving field issues during construction.
  • Perform field surveys, inspections, measurements, and document as-built conditions.
  • Participate in project meetings and provide ongoing technical support to electric production teams.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of utility or industrial electrical design and construction experience.
  • Strong knowledge of power plant systems, equipment, and operations.
  • Working knowledge of applicable electrical codes and standards.
  • Experience with construction support, inspections, and field coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (required).
  • Experience with raster design/CAD overlays and document management systems (e.g., OpenText).
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Qualifications

  • AutoCAD certification required.
  • Associate degree or higher preferred.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and computer skills.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license.

Salary

$131,000 - $154,000 a year
