Salary and Benefits

  • Salary package - £64,317 pa including allowance + Bonus + Paid overtime + Job Requirement Company Car.

Role overview

As a Substation Supervisory Engineer, you’ll lead a team of National Grid Fitters delivering maintenance, defect resolution and operational readiness across high-voltage substation environments. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines technical decision-making with strong people management. You’ll support the Operations Manager with resource planning, team performance, capability development and day-to-day delivery, while creating a positive, accountable and performance-driven culture.

 

You won’t be confined to a desk. You’ll be out on site in overalls and a hard hat, leading work on critical assets and ensuring teams and contractors are set up to deliver safely, efficiently and to standard. The role covers maintenance activity, high-priority project support, contractor coordination, permit-to-work arrangements, Risk Assessments and Method Statements. You’ll develop towards Senior Authorised Person status, with SAP training expected to take approximately 24 to 36 months and including short stays away from home at our Eakring training facility in Nottinghamshire and other sites as you build your portfolio. You’ll also join a standby rota, supporting emergency readiness and black start resilience.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • A minimum NVQ Level 4 or HNC Engineering qualification, preferably Electrical Engineering.
  • Proven leadership or supervisory experience within an engineering, maintenance or operational environment.
  • The confidence to lead, coach and manage team performance, including development conversations, performance reviews, sickness management and disciplinary processes when required.
  • A strong safety mindset, with excellent knowledge of safety and environmental legislation, practices and policies.
  • The ability to commit to SAP training, including courses at Eakring in Nottinghamshire and short stays away from home.
  • A full UK driving licence.
  • The ability to become authorised as a Category 1 Full SAP and join a standby rota, which means you’ll need to live within 45 minutes’ travel of Northfleet Substation.

Desirable experience

  • Experience across substation assets such as switchgear, HV cable systems, protection and control, with exposure to electrical, mechanical, civil engineering disciplines.
