About the Position
We are presently seeking to fill a few Gas Mechanic Helper positions in the Albany, Capital region (Glenmont and Schenectady) at a starting hourly rate of $33.56. Under general supervision to assist Gas Mechanics of higher classification and as proficiency increases to perform work of progressively increasing variety and complexity.

Our mission in Gas Field Operations (GFO) is to safely and efficiently provide natural gas to all National Grid gas customers. The GFO department is responsible for installing and maintaining National Grid’s underground gas assets. Qualified crews of GFO mechanics will excavate and repair leaking or damaged gas services and mains. They replace older leak prone assets with newer, more reliable pipe every year, which is a large compliance focus for National Grid t. Gas Mechanics are responsible for physically performing the work done by the GFO department, such as pipe fitting, gas leak investigations, installing new mains and services, retiring old mains and services, responding to leaks and damages, etc.

 

As a Gas Mechanic Helper, you will work directly under more experienced Gas Mechanics to help maintain and deliver gas to our customer base. As your proficiency increases and your training continues, you will have the opportunity to be promoted to a Gas Mechanic A to further your skills.

 


Job Qualifications:

  • Must possess valid CDL B (CDL A preferred)
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent 
  • Should be mechanically inclined and capable of performing strenuous work;
  • Applicant will be required to demonstrate the mental ability and aptitude to become a Gas Mechanic.
  • Must pass physical abilities examination
  • Must pass validated aptitude test
  • Must have a valid drivers license with a safe driving history that meets National Grids Safe Driver Policy
     

The physical abilities examination (PAE) is a work-sample test designed to determine whether candidates possess the physical abilities needed to perform successfully in the target job. The PAE for each Gas Field Operations and Gas Network Operations disciplines consists of five work-sample tasks. For Gas Field Operations and Gas Network Operations Disciplines, the PAE consists of the ability to physically handle lifting and handling a jackhammer, Pipe Fitting Test, Ability to demonstrate being able to exit a trench 42” deep, Ability to physically handle shoveling imitated to the job task, & Ability to support and control weight of a 24’ ladder and work safely at heights.

 

NOTE: Employees who demonstrate their aptitude for the work and establish a satisfactory record as a Gas Mechanic Helper will be promoted to a Gas Mechanic A. A satisfactory record must include the successful completion of Gas Mechanic A school and meeting the qualifications set forth for a Gas Mechanic A.

Salary

  • $33.56/Hr

Many of the terms and conditions of employment for this position are defined by a collective bargaining agreement that the Company has with a local union.  Newly hired employees are bound by the terms of the collective bargaining agreement as well as other agreements between the Company and the local union.
