Our Gridtern Program provides current college students the ability to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking opportunities, community involvement, and most importantly, have fun!

Available Roles

Vegetation and Reliability Analytics (Buffalo, NY) 

Our Vegetation and Reliability Analytics team oversees the development, maintenance, and reporting related to our company's vegetation strategy and electrical reliability performance in the upstate New York region. This team is dedicated to the internal and external tracking, reporting, and forecasting of National Grid’s distribution and transmission electrical system performance, seeking to enhance the presentation of the company's trends across various filters and system components. As a Gridtern, you will help track and categorize specific types of equipment and their performance, including National Grid’s distribution, sub-transmission, and transmission systems. You will also collaborate with other reliability engineers to identify trends related to weather and electrical component failures, while partnering with the vegetation strategy team to explore potential trends associated with vegetation-related outages. 

 

Distribution Planning and Asset Management (Buffalo, NY) 

Our Distribution Planning & Asset Management team aims to strengthen the resilience of sub-transmission and distribution systems against adverse weather while modernizing the grid to meet future capacity and customer service needs. Key responsibilities include strategic planning for system enhancements, offering technical support for customer interconnections, and monitoring reliability performance. The team collaborates with various National Grid departments to integrate distributed generation and ensure regulatory compliance, while also identifying process improvements and maintaining stakeholder communication. 

As a Gridtern, you will assist engineers with their daily responsibilities while also contributing your own research and analyses. This involves performing an emergency scenario analysis for selected Buffalo Stations to minimize the impact of catastrophic events on customers, as well as creating a retirement plan for legacy distribution networks that are no longer in service. Additionally, you will offer essential data support for various DPAM activities.

Distribution Design (Buffalo, NY) 

Our Distribution Design team creates solutions within the power distribution system while adhering to all current standards. This team collaborates with multiple departments on projects aimed at maintaining, enhancing, expanding, and supporting the power grid. Their responsibilities include performing site visits to assist in designs and ensure the proper location of current or future assets. 

 

As a Gridtern, you will support designers and design supervisors in various tasks, participate in field visits, and collaborate with other departments. Additionally, you may be assigned other tasks as they arise. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in power distribution design and contribute to the development of a reliable energy infrastructure. 

 

Regional Account Services (RAS) (Buffalo, NY) 

 

Our Regional Account Services (RAS) team is a customer-facing team within National Grid that manages electric service requests, planned outages, and account coordination for regional customers. This team ensures timely scheduling, communication, and compliance with regulatory requirements, acting as the primary liaison between customers and internal operations. Our Regional Account Services (RAS) representatives handle complex service projects, coordinate with engineering and construction teams, and maintain customer satisfaction through proactive updates and issue resolution. Additionally, the team supports strategic initiatives like outage improvement projects and process enhancements to improve reliability and customer experience. 

 

As a Gridtern, you will support end‑to‑end service projects by collecting and validating field data, mapping assets and updates in GIS, and mining datasets to surface actionable insights, while working day‑to‑day with a highly motivated, cross‑functional team. This opportunity will blend both field work and office analysis, emphasize rigorous error checking and documentation, and require rapid learning and navigating through various corporate systems to keep jobs moving and stakeholders informed. 

What You’ll Need

  • Availability to start on the program start date, June 15, 2026, and work full-time (40 hours a week) for the duration of the summer
  • Must be registered as a full-time student and continue your education full-time through the Fall 2026 semester
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
  • Majoring in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, GIS studies, Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science or related fields 
  • Have accumulated 18 or more credits and be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT)
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license with a safe driving history that complies with National Grid’s Safe Driver policy. This qualification will be specified in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range
$21.00-$29.00 an hour

 

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.

 

Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
