National Grid is hiring a Corporate functions, Health, Wellbeing, and Safety Specialist. This role can be based in our Syracuse, NY, Brooklyn, NY or Waltham, MA offices. This is a hybrid role (working from home, in-office, and field). Travel will be required to other US National Grid Offices, training facilities and very occasional visits to the UK.

Job Purpose

Join the Corporate Functions SHE Team to lead and coordinate health, wellbeing, and safety initiatives for over 4,000 employees across the UK and US. This pivotal role focuses on creating a safe, inclusive, and health-conscious environment for both office-based and remote workers and advising smaller operational teams, driving impactful programs that support the diverse needs of the workforce.

 

Collaborate with global stakeholders to influence employee safety, health, and wellbeing. Partner with Function-based SHE Leads to align plans and embed best practices, providing expert guidance as they are non-specialists balancing full-time roles.

Key Accountabilities

•    Supporting the ongoing creation, implementation, continual improvement and targeted assurance of a new global safety management system for Corporate Functions.
•    Completing assurance checks to ensure offices Corporate Function employees work from, meet legal and regulatory standards for health, safety, and environment.
•    Lead global health and safety projects to reduce risk and strengthen culture. Deliver targeted wellbeing programs, focusing on mental health and musculoskeletal health through campaigns, workshops, and training.
•    Drive continuous improvement in SHE performance.
•    Promote a positive safety culture by role modelling proactive behaviours and collaborating with leaders to embed health, wellbeing, and safety into everyday practices—while also enhancing safety awareness among non-operational employees by clarifying their roles and responsibilities in maintaining a safe workplace.
•    Track key safety compliance metrics; driver training, SHE Leadership Visits, near misses, good catches, ESD’s and incidents using a Power BI Dashboard. 
•    Supporting investigations of accidents/incidents, advise on legal frameworks, and share learnings.  Act as Registrar and triage for global Corporate Functions.
•    Align systems and practices with H&S peers across the organisation to avoid duplication.
•    Stay updated on global trends in workplace wellbeing and safety.
•    Act as a trusted source for health and safety concerns, providing expert advice, technical support, and assurance to SHE Leads and business managers.

Qualifications

•    You are committed to promoting a safe working environment, with strong safety knowledge and experience. You have a foundational understanding of US safety regulations, including OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, and ISO 45001, and are eager to expand your knowledge of UK legislation.  
•    You are able to analyse data and spot key trends, have proactive approach to taking onboard best practices and new technologies make you an asset to any safety-focused team.
•    Empathetic and approachable, with strong stakeholder engagement skills and a genuine passion for employee wellbeing.
•    Ability to translate data and risks into clear, engaging insights to support communication across a workforce where safety, health, and wellbeing may be perceived as low risk. 
•    Strategic and hands-on, able to work independently within a small team with minimal support.

•    OSHA 10, OSHA 30, or OSHA #511 (or equivalent)

•    Minimum of 3 years in an Occupational Health and Safety role
•    Strong understanding of OSHA regulations

•    Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, excellent communication, and proficiency with Microsoft programs.

$105k - $123k a year in Waltham, MA.

$93k - $109k a year in Syracuse, NY.
