Our Gridtern Program provides current college students the ability to gain practical experience within the energy industry. Your summer will begin on Monday, June 15, 2026, and will be filled with meaningful work experiences, professional development, networking opportunities, community involvement, and most importantly, have fun!

Available Roles

Advanced Data and Analytics (Machine Learning Engineering) (Brooklyn, NY) 

Our Advanced Data and Analytics (Machine Learning Engineering) team is responsible for developing data pipelines for production jobs and executing various data science prototype models into production. This team not only addresses and resolves production bugs but also monitors our broader organizational operations and provisions the necessary infrastructure within Azure to keep our systems running efficiently. 
 
As a Gridtern, you will assist this team with a variety of Machine Learning projects and help develop a platform tool for our Data Science team. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with other data scientists to understand their needs and build data pipelines that enhance a greater ingest of data. Lastly, you will also participate in code reviews to enhance code quality and support the cloud infrastructure required for Data Engineering, Data Science, Machine Learning Engineering, and Machine Learning Operations. 

 

 

Corrosion NYC (Brooklyn, NY) 

Our NYC Corrosion team is essential in managing and maintaining the cathodic protection system for over a thousand miles of pipeline, including distribution, transmission, regulator stations, CNG, and LNG facilities. This team is committed to ensuring the integrity of our pipelines and compliance with industry standards. As a Gridtern, you will have the opportunity to participate in various projects focused on enhancing processes and improving efficiency, primarily using Excel and database software.

Staten Island Engineering (LPP CSC Reinforcement) (Staten Island, NY) 

Our Staten Island Engineering team is essential in planning gas infrastructure replacements and supporting existing systems for the New York City and State Government. They work proactively and reactively on various projects, collaborating with government entities and other utilities. The team manages system investments while ensuring its protection, evaluates plans, and develops comprehensive construction strategies to maintain the safety and reliability of our infrastructure for the communities we serve. Their efforts also secure investments for our ratepayers and shareholders. 

 

As a Gridtern, you will help identify and execute projects. Your duties will include reviewing city design plans, developing project plans, coordinating with the city for permits, and managing material purchases. You will collaborate with the team on project management, track and finalize paperwork, and work closely with company engineers, supervisors, union workforce, and government engineers and contractors. Projects may vary in pace, with some progressing slowly while others may require quick action, including emergency tasks. 

 

 

City/State Construction - (Brooklyn Greenpoint, NY) 

Our City/State Construction team designs and manage projects related to the construction and relocation of gas distribution materials, aligning with current and future capital improvement plans funded by city and state agencies in New York and NYC. This team consists of engineers who draft design plans and job packages for gas main construction projects, overseeing all aspects of the project, including scope, budget, schedule, and closeout documentation throughout its lifecycle. 

 

As a Gridtern in this position, you will collaborate with engineers in creating design plans and job packages to initiate gas main replacement projects. Your responsibilities will include producing drawings, generating accounting numbers, requesting permits, reviewing city plans, and responding to requests for field meetings. This internship will provide you with hands-on experience in project management and design within the gas distribution sector.

Gas Planning and Design Engineering NYC (Brooklyn Greenpoint, NY) 

Our Gas Distribution Design Engineering Department is responsible for designing and managing projects that ensure the safe and reliable operation of the gas distribution system, including proactive gas main replacements and infrastructure upgrades. The team provides technical oversight during construction, resolves design-related issues, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards. They work closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to deliver projects efficiently and effectively, while also supporting permitting and procurement processes to keep projects on track. 

 

As a Gridtern, you will support the design and planning of gas infrastructure projects, including proactive gas main replacements. Your responsibilities will include assisting with engineering documentation, conducting design reviews, and coordinating with field teams. You will also gain hands-on experience by visiting construction sites and shadowing other departments, which will help you build a broader understanding of utility operations and project execution. This internship offers valuable insights into the gas distribution sector and the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects. 

 

What You’ll Need

  • Availability to start on the program start date, June 15, 2026, and work full-time (40 hours a week) for the duration of the summer
  • Must be registered as a full-time student and continue your education full-time through the Fall 2026 semester
  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree
  • Majoring in STEM, Computer Science, Data Science, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management/Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related fields
  • Have accumulated 18 or more credits and be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States (including CPT & OPT)
  • Some Gridtern positions will require a valid US Driver’s license with a safe driving history that complies with National Grid’s Safe Driver policy. This qualification will be specified in the department specific Gridtern role(s) descriptions at point of interview

Salary Range
$25.00-$34.00 an hour

 

Candidates will be assessed and provided offers based on major, degree type, and class year. Our Gridtern Program does not offer relocation, housing assistance, or public transportation reimbursement for Gridterns; however, we can provide a list of resources to utilize in making your arrangements.

 

Please note that as a Gridtern, you must reside within our existing footprint, which includes Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont. You must also reside within a reasonable, commutable distance to your assigned primary office.
