Job Purpose
The Lead Estimator will be responsible for reviewing third-party comprehensive cost estimates for SIR’s complex environmental remediation and construction projects. This role involves analyzing project specifications, collaborating with teams, and challenging the estimating process to ensure accuracy, competitiveness, and alignment with company objectives. The ideal candidate will possess deep knowledge of environmental remediation, strong analytical skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
Key Accountabilities
- Ensure quality and accuracy of cost estimates for complex environmental remediation and construction projects.
 - Analyze project drawings, specifications, and documentation to understand scope and associated costs.
 - Ensure consistency of design and estimation approach across consultants and regions.
 - Collaborate with Engineers to implement corrections or adjustments.
 - Confirm quantity take-offs and unit pricing to develop estimates.
 - Prepare qualifications to communicate discrepancies, missed scope, and project approach.
 - Evaluate design documents for cost-saving alternatives.
 - Apply SIR Control 1 and Control 4 SOPs to validate cost assumptions, unit rates, volumes, and supporting documentation.
 - Perform risk assessments to determine reserve change applicability and ensure estimates meet audit standards.
 - Document review steps using Excel Cost Estimate Summary templates and maintain audit-ready records.
 - Lead and mentor team members on estimating processes and best practices.
 - Oversee development of conceptual estimates, detailed takeoffs, and cost analysis for multiple projects.
 - Work closely with project administration, engineers, and program management to gather estimating data.
 - Present QA/QC findings and contribute to strategic discussions.
 - Identify risks and uncertainties in scope and pricing, and develop mitigation strategies.
 - Ensure estimates reflect contractual, regulatory, and environmental considerations.
 - Refine estimating tools, software, and processes for improved accuracy and efficiency.
 - Conduct post-project reviews to compare estimated vs. actual costs.
 - Provide feedback and training to improve estimating practices.
 - Collaborate with PMO to enhance estimating databases and templates.
 - Stay informed on market trends, material costs, labor rates, and remediation technologies.
 - Ensure estimates remain competitive while maintaining profitability.
 
Qualifications
- 7–10 years estimating experience in environmental remediation or construction projects.
 - Strong understanding of construction accounting, environmental regulations, and remediation techniques.
 - Experience applying SIR Control 1 and Control 4 SOPs to cost estimation and financial validation.
 - Proficient in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff).
 - Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including cost modeling and audit documentation.
 - Experience with SAP, Power BI, and Access for financial tracking and reporting.
 - Certified Estimating Professional (CEP) or equivalent preferred.
 - OSHA HAZWOPER 40 certification preferred.
 - Familiarity with environmental remediation standards and OSHA regulations or related field (Master’s preferred).
 - Finance or Business Management degree or certifications preferred.
 - Strong analytical and quantitative skills with attention to detail.
 - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
 - Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
 - Valid driver’s license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy (e.g., must not have more than one traffic violation in the last year and/or more than one motor vehicle accident within the past three years.) required.

Salary: $138,000.00 - $162,000.00 USD
