Job Purpose

 

 

The Supervisor, Damage Prevention is responsible for the oversight and execution of Damage Prevention activities across Downstate New York, with a strong focus on safety, contractor performance, regulatory compliance, and data‑informed decision making.

This role leads and supervises locate and mark operations, damage investigations, and field audits, while also partnering closely with Damage Prevention leadership, analytics, compliance, and field operations teams to translate performance data, dashboards, and risk indicators into actionable strategies that reduce excavation related damages to National Grid’s buried gas infrastructure.

Success in this role requires the ability to interpret and apply analytical insights, including dashboards, performance metrics, and trend analysis—to guide field execution, prioritize risk, and drive continuous improvement. This position plays a key role in aligning field operations, contractor oversight, and enterprise reporting to support National Grid’s evolving, risk-based Damage Prevention model.

 

 

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Lead and supervise Damage Prevention activities in Downstate, including daily oversight of Damage Prevention inspectors and contractor locate and mark operations.
  • Supervise the daily locate and mark activities of contractors locating National Grid gas facilities.
  • Monitor contractor crew performance to ensure work is completed safely, accurately, and in compliance with Company standards and NYS Code Rule 753.
  • Respond to first, second, and third-party damage investigations and ensure timely, accurate, and complete damage investigation reports.
  • Perform systematic field audits to verify locate accuracy, mark completeness, and contractor compliance.
  • Work with DP Advisor staff and Urbint Ticket Risk Assessment programs to prioritize and visit the highest risk 811 tickets.
  • Review performance reports, field summaries, and dashboards (e.g., Power BI or similar tools) to monitor Damage Prevention performance, excavation risk, contractor trends, and compliance metrics.
  • Use field observations, investigation results, and available trend information to identify repeat locations, systemic issues, and emerging excavation risks.

Qualifications

 

 

  • Associate degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Expert knowledge of underground facility locating, gas construction, and transmission & distribution construction.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams involved in field operations and contractor oversight.
  • Strong understanding of NYS Code Rule 753 – Protection of Underground Facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, GIS prints, and work orders.
  • Valid, nonrestricted driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret performance dashboards, reports, and data visualizations to support operational decision making.
  • Familiarity with Power BI dashboards or similar business intelligence tools preferred.
  • Practical problem-solving mindset with the ability to recognize recurring field issues, contractor performance concerns, and potential root causes related to excavation damage.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and comfort reviewing reports, field documentation, and dashboard summaries.
  • Ability to partner effectively with analysts, technical teams, and field leaders to support meaningful metrics, accurate documentation, and practical performance improvement.

Downstate NY Salary:$108,000 - $126,000 a year
