National Grid is hiring a Lead Transmission Planning Engineer – Successful candidate can be located in either our Waltham, MA, Boston, MA, or our Brooklyn, NY office.

Job Purpose

National Grid Ventures (NGV) is looking for a knowledgeable, curious, and driven Lead System Planning Engineer to join our Grid Integration and Planning Team. This individual will support our NGV projects by carrying out transmission analysis and working with interconnection interfaces in MISO, PJM, NYISO, and ISO-NE. They will develop work products that provide sufficient decision-making information to management and to effectuate the interconnection of projects to the transmission system. This role will provide support to key initiatives to support NGV’s growth and partnerships throughout the Northeast US.

Key Accountabilities

  • Perform, lead, or facilitate transmission planning assessments and analyses.
  • Support production cost modeling, economic and regional market evaluations to assist in key strategic insights, identify or confirm project opportunities and solutions.
  • Apply innovative approaches to simulation and analysis that can help identify or support new initiatives.
  • Conduct technical analysis as needed to support potential project partnerships.
  • Document, present and report findings and justifications.  Help prepare executive summaries or investment committee papers.
  • Support or lead on siting, permitting and licensing requirements and/or hearings, if required.
  • Represent National Grid interests on national, regional, and local levels when necessary.
  • Oversee consultants, engineers or other subject matter experts as required to augment or complement the Business Development team.
  • Work in a project team and matrix environment interacting with individuals across NG functions in the US and UK.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or related technical fields. Power systems focus desired.
  • 5+ years of experience in transmission system analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex model outputs into business insight & articulate the impact of results.
  • Broad knowledge of US power industry standards, structures, policies, regulations & market fundamentals is essential.
  • Familiarity with recent trends and technologies in electric transmission, on-shore and off-shore wind, other large-scale renewable generation, energy storage, conventional generation and emerging technologies such as green hydrogen.
  • Strong track record of relevant professional experience in projects, including developing business cases, optioneering, data analysis, estimating and work structure planning.
  • Talent for handling & manipulating data to forecast, derive trends and test sensitivities.
  • Interest in offshore wind and competitive transmission project development and execution.
  • Excellent communication skills with proven ability to persuade, challenge and build credibility based on personally derived recommendations.
  • Computational literacy including handling large data sets is mandatory.
  • Fundamental understanding of the components of offshore and onshore transmission grid assets including key risks and opportunities is required.
  • Ability to develop tools and processes to facilitate best practice & knowledge sharing.

Salary

New England MA $156,000 - $183,000 a year

Downstate NY $167,000 - $196,000 a year
