Key Accountabilities

  • Responsible for routines associated with the replacement of paving removed for construction work.
  • Handle field inspection and coordination work for the installation of customer services.
  • Inspect job site to determine field conditions, obtain permits, check contractor crews to insure work meets Company standards, handle correspondence, clerical work and complaints regarding the above, and check contractors bill for accuracy.
  • From records, plans, and through field inspection, determine points of interference between public property and Company facilities and perform mark outs.
  • Recommend changes, maintain close contact with public authorities, builders, contractors, etc., regarding complaints and requirements.
  • Plan work, maintain records, and dispatch crews for PSC programs such as detection survey, trunk main inspection, etc.
  • Make minor repairs to instruments and tools.
  • Inspect contractor crews performing limited construction work.
  • Use pressure recorders and other instruments necessary to perform this work.
  • Check work orders for availability of material and when work is finished, for completeness and accuracy of papers and sketches.
  • Prepare, design, and estimate gas facilities as directed.
  • May include analysis of load demand, required equipment, estimates, sketches, permit application, and resolution of conflicts.
  • Maintain office maps.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE & TRAINING: Ability to read and write English, comprehension at a level to post information from one record to another.  Maintain files and logs, plot graphs, knowledge of basic grammar, spelling, composition and business writing. 

 EXPERIENCE:  Two years' experience is recommended 

 EDUCATION:  High school, and at least one college-level course in each of the following subjects: math, drafting, engineering, and physics. Courses must be taken from an accredited college/university and meet the following criteria:

1. Ideally, courses should be instructor-led. If not, online courses (live or otherwise) may be acceptable provided that an instructor is involved with assigning and reviewing coursework

2.Ideally, courses should be semester-long in length (academic-year or accelerated summer-session). Online courses (as noted in item "1") that can be completed at a student's own pace may be acceptable

3.Courses must meet the requirements for National Grid's tuition-reimbursement program

For the above-noted items, the Department and Labor Relations shall decide as to whether the planned/completed coursework meets the position's educational requirements, and Local 1049 will be consulted.

 

If courses are not worth at least 3 credits/credit hours, the Department and Labor Relations shall decide as to whether the planned/completed coursework meets the position's educational requirements, and Local 1049 will be consulted.

 

If the courses do not meet one or more of the three conditions above, exceptions may be made upon review by the Department and Labor Relations as to whether the planned/completed coursework meets the position's educational requirements prior to the interview process, and Local 1049 will be consulted.

* (Incumbents who demonstrate satisfactory performance for one (1) year in this classification and have completed an AAS degree in Electrical, Mechanical or AS degree in Engineering Science, or college equivalent will be eligible for promotion to the classification of Underground Field Inspector Grade 7).

Applicants must have a valid NYS Driver's License with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy  and successfully complete a Company driving test.  

In addition to possessing the qualifications for this vacancy, employees selected will be expected to work overtime in accordance with departmental requirements and to participate in the Company's Emergency Restoration Program as may be required.

Employees selected for this classification will be required to participate in federally mandated drug testing programs prior to selection, randomly on a year-round basis, after an accident and for reasonable cause.
