Job Purpose
In New York, the state has set ambitious clean energy and environmental goals aimed at accelerating the deployment of clean electric generation and electrifying heating and transportation. In alignment with these objectives, the Director of Clean Energy Development will play a visible and strategic role that will have a lasting and significant impact on National Grid's electric business in New York.
This position is designed to promote strategic and proactive thought leadership regarding transmission and distribution system needs, which will be essential for influencing future rate cases, responding to emerging state and federal energy policy initiatives, and supporting the asset modernization of National Grid’s regulated electric utility in upstate New York.
The successful candidate will be adept at formulating key messages in support of the Clean Energy Development department’s initiatives, gathering critical information to effectively represent National Grid’s New York Electric Business Unit in external stakeholder settings. They will need to acquire an in-depth knowledge of transmission development issues related to National Grid’s regulated utilities and a strong passion for the clean energy sector. This Director role will be a primary voice for the Company on electric system matters in support of state policy, community benefits, and the electrification of various economic sectors.
This role requires a strategic and tactical hands-on leader who brings credible expertise, exceptional relationship-building skills, and a fresh perspective to the position. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong commercial acumen to effectively assess the company’s position regarding key studies and initiatives sponsored by Clean Energy Development that impact National Grid’s New York Electric Business Unit.
Key Accountabilities
- Coordinate the development of regulatory filings and business cases, proposing new execution models as necessary to capitalize on opportunities.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for effectively communicating complex utility issues impacting the Upstate New York electric market, while identifying opportunities and risks for the Electric Business Unit.
- Develop and implement a stakeholder relationship management strategy, ensuring clear accountabilities for specific external stakeholders in collaboration with internal system operations and planning.
- Influence and manage internal stakeholders to secure buy-in regarding Clean Energy Development initiatives from relevant departments.
- Identify emerging clean energy project opportunities and partnerships that align with National Grid’s strategic business objectives and customer values.
- Assemble and lead virtual teams across National Grid in pursuit of decarbonization efforts, engaging external consultants as needed to develop robust and compelling business cases and proposals.
- Collaborate with relevant internal Corporate Communications and Government Affairs departments to ideate and develop external communications plans, value propositions, and positions.
- Identify policy gaps and advocate for new utility infrastructure use case filings.
- Support future rate case submissions relevant to projects sponsored by the department.
Qualifications
- Familiarity with electric system planning, NYISO functions, and electric rates is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of New York electric utility regulations and familiarity with utility finance.
- Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in business, economics, engineering, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of experience working with New York external stakeholders in the electric sector.
- Significant understanding of commercial, market, and relationship management aspects of business development and issues affecting the utility industry.
- Proven experience working with external stakeholders in New York on electric energy initiatives, including the New York Department of Public Service.
- Exceptional interpersonal, relationship-building, and collaboration skills at all organizational levels.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting internal stakeholder engagement at the director and senior leadership levels.
- Experience leading virtual teams to pursue business opportunities.
- Proven ability to organize and lead teams through ambiguity to achieve high performance and desired business results.
- Confident and impactful public speaking skills are essential.

Upstate NY Salary: $188,000 - $221,000 a year
Downstate NY Salary: $226,000 - $266,000 a year
Please be advised that due to the nature of this position, incumbents are subject to federal Drug & Alcohol safety regulations governing US Department of Transportation ("DOT") covered positions, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA). As such, the Company’s testing programs and policies regarding the use of federally prohibited drugs or alcohol, for recreational or medical purposes, will remain in effect for these safety-sensitive, DOT covered positions.
