Job Purpose

 

The Engineer supports the planning, design, technical review, and execution of gas distribution infrastructure projects and programs. This role applies engineering principles to help develop safe, reliable, and compliant solutions in accordance with company standards, applicable regulations, and industry best practices.

The Engineer works with internal stakeholders and external engineering partners to support the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of gas distribution infrastructure projects.

Key Accountabilities

 

 

  • Support the engineering development and technical execution of gas distribution infrastructure projects, including main replacement, customer growth, municipal coordination, and system reinforcement programs.
  • Develop and review engineering designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, and construction work packages under appropriate oversight.
  • Perform design quality reviews and coordinate technical input from engineers, designers, internal stakeholders, and engineering consultants.
  • Support engineering evaluations related to system capacity, constructability, reliability, safety, and asset performance.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Customer Connections, Construction, Asset Management, Damage Prevention, Maps & Records, and other stakeholders to support project execution from concept through completion.
  • Interpret and apply applicable regulations, engineering standards, and company requirements.
  • Develop project scopes, technical specifications, cost estimates, and supporting documentation for capital projects.
  • Coordinate with external engineering consultants and contracted design firms to support quality deliverables, schedule alignment, and compliance with company standards.
  • Participate in initiatives focused on engineering efficiency, design quality, standardization, process improvement, and the adoption of engineering best practices.
  • Manage assigned tasks and deliverables across multiple engineering projects while supporting commitments related to safety, quality, schedule, and budget.

 

 

Qualifications

 

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience.
  • Experience applying engineering principles to the design, construction, operation, maintenance, or management of infrastructure, utility, industrial, manufacturing, energy, or related systems.
  • Ability to review engineering drawings, technical specifications, calculations, and construction documentation with appropriate guidance.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and engineering judgment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage assigned work, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to travel throughout National Grid's service territory as required.

 

Preferred

  • Experience in natural gas utility, pipeline, or other regulated infrastructure industries.
  • Knowledge of gas distribution infrastructure, including mains, services, valves, pressure regulation equipment, and associated system components.
  • Experience interpreting and applying utility regulations, engineering standards, and industry codes.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or progress toward professional licensure.
  • Experience coordinating with engineering consultants or contracted engineering services.
  • Advanced degree and/or relevant industry certifications.

Upstate NY Salary: $96,000 - $112,000 a year
