National Grid is hiring a Senior Driver/Heavy Equipment Instructor. This is an onsite role located at our Millbury Training Facility, in Worceter, MA.
Job Purpose
A Driving/Heavy Equipment Instructor plays a vital role in developing the next generation of safe, efficient, and knowledgeable equipment operators. This professional imparts critical skills related to operating heavy machinery—such as backhoes, excavators, forklifts and large trucks—and prepares trainees for success in various their position at National Grid. The instructor’s mission is not merely to teach operation but to instill a culture of safety, responsibility, and continuous improvement.
Key Accountabilities
· Instruction and Training: Deliver classroom and practical instruction on the safe and effective operation of a variety of heavy equipment and vehicles. Adapt teaching methods to suit different learning styles and skill levels.
· Curriculum Development: Design, update, and improve training courses and materials, ensuring adherence to current industry standards, safety regulations, and manufacturer guidelines.
· Safety Advocacy: Promote and enforce all safety protocols and best practices. Train students in the identification of potential hazards, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency response procedures.
· Equipment Demonstration: Provide hands-on demonstrations of equipment operation, showcasing proper startup, shutdown, maneuvering, and maintenance procedures.
· Assessment and Evaluation: Monitor trainee progress, administer written and practical exams, and provide constructive feedback. Document outcomes and recommend further instruction or remediation as necessary.
· Maintenance Oversight: Instruct students on routine equipment inspections, basic preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting common issues. Ensure all instructional equipment is maintained in safe, working order.
· Record Keeping: Maintain accurate training records, attendance logs, and equipment usage reports as required by organizational and regulatory policies.
· Professional Development: Stay updated on emerging trends in heavy equipment technology, industry regulations, and teaching methodologies. Pursue ongoing certifications and training as necessary.
· Mentorship and Support: Foster an encouraging learning environment. Mentor students through challenges and promote a growth mindset in skill development and problem-solving.
Qualifications
· Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education or specialized training in heavy equipment operation, transportation, or a related field is highly desirable.
· Experience: Significant hands-on experience operating a range of heavy equipment and commercial vehicles. Prior work as a supervisor, trainer, or operator in construction, mining, transport, or a related industry preferred.
· Licenses/Certifications: Possession of a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL A preferred), operator license (2A, 1C and 1D preferred) for various types of equipment, and instructor certifications as required by local or national authorities.
· Knowledge: In-depth understanding of mechanical systems, safety practices, and legal requirements related to heavy equipment operation. Familiarity with DOT, OSHA, and other relevant regulations.
· Skills: Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to use training aids and technology (simulators, multimedia presentations, telematics, etc.) for effective instruction.
· Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy objects, work outdoors in various weather conditions, and demonstrate equipment operation for extended periods.

$111 - $145k a year
