Job Purpose
Reporting to the Head of Public Affairs & Policy, the Vice President of US Public Policy will lead a new team (four people) that provides strategic direction to National Grid’s public policy priorities, partnering closely with Government Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement to develop and implement policy and advocacy strategy within Corporate Affairs.
The Public Policy team pairs policy domain and advocacy expertise, and serves as a key fulcrum for collaboration on policy analysis, development, and prioritization with leaders and SMEs across National Grid’s business units and functions, including Strategy and Regulatory Policy.
The person in this post will provide exceptional interdisciplinary foresight of the emerging environment, and play a critical role directing and integrating a strategic public policy agenda constructed around horizon scanning, research and analysis, policy development, issue management, data and insights, and thought leadership.
This role will help ensure National Grid’s interests are advanced through collaboration across internal teams and external partners to anticipate emerging trends, and proactively shape opportunities to drive impactful policy outcomes.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead US public policy strategy, collaborating with colleagues across the business to develop creative and actionable policy positions that align with National Grid’s objectives and are tuned to the external environment
- Build, lead, and elevate a public policy team, providing strategic direction, expert analysis, mentoring, and professional development, while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and high performance
- Provide strategic policy insight and advice to senior leaders to inform business strategy, including through exceptional written communication and executive and Board briefings
- Establish and manage processes that leverage data and technology to anticipate structural policy trends and critical issues, working closely with subject matter experts across the business to determine opportunities and risks for National Grid
- Lead through collaboration a set of processes that deliver aligned policy platforms and priorities, as well as proactive and efficient issue management that tracks progress and outcomes
- Act as a primary point of escalation for the public policy team, ensuring coherence across the wide range of policy matters under consideration across the US
- Collaborate on global policy alignment and development, working with counterparts and colleagues outside the US
- Build and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders
- Collaborate on thought leadership and integrated advocacy campaigns, advising on policy, communication, and stakeholder strategies
- As required, represent National Grid in externally facing public forums, including conferences, panels and media appearances to enhance reputation and promote policy positions
- Oversee the budget for the Public Policy team, ensuring efficient and strategic allocation of resources

- Strong public speaking and representation skills, with the ability to act as a thought leader and corporate ambassador in public forums
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to convey complex ideas to diverse audiences
- Strong influence and negotiation skills with an ability align stakeholder interests and inform and shape senior stakeholder decisions

Salary: $246,000-$370,000 a year.
