National Grid is hiring a Risk Managment, Risk Controls Testing & Compliance Controls Testing Lead. This role can be based in our Syracuse, NY, Brooklyn, NY or Melville, NY offices. This is a hybrid role.
Job Purpose
This role is responsible for conducting a range of second-line control testing and risk management activities to both support and independently challenge the business in mitigating principal risks, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and upholding the company’s control framework. Team members are also expected to promote a proactive risk management culture and to consistently demonstrate and foster a mindset of respectful challenge throughout the organization.
Key Accountabilities
- Perform design and operating effectiveness testing of existing business controls to mitigate principal business risks, including risks associated with regulatory requirements.
- Perform reviews to assess the effectiveness of the process and control framework for emerging regulatory requirements.
- Identify controls, gaps, issues, and weaknesses, as well as opportunities for best practices and process improvements, both within the team and across the broader organization—including, but not limited to, the first line/business.
- This role requires you to operate independently and objectively, consistently providing respectful challenge on all matters related to our work. At the same time, you will be expected to build and maintain trusting, value-driven relationships with all stakeholders, including the Chief Risk Organization, Internal Audit, senior management, and others.
- Participate in and work with the business in their day-to-day activities to enable and influence a proactive risk management culture, provide guidance, consultation, challenge work, identify the need for controls or improvement, or escalation and/or collaboration with other parts of the organization (e.g., Legal and Compliance).
- Establish a robust working relationship with key stakeholders throughout the organization, e.g., Technology, Cyber, Data, Internal Audit, Customer, Compliance, Legal, Safety, Health & Environment, Gas Pipeline Safety etc. to ensure a holistic view and a collaborative working relationship to support a top down and bottoms up risk-based approach to managing risk.
- Work closely with the Chief Risk Office in maturing the Enterprise Risk Management framework.
- Support and drive various tasks or exercises in collaboration with the first line/business, such as Quarterly Risk Review, Emerging Risk framework, continuous improvement, material controls, etc.
- Interpret and implement key initiatives from various parts of the organization, including the Chief Risk Office, Compliance, Legal functions within National Grid which feed into the broader risk management and compliance framework.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated strength in exercising sound judgment and effectively utilizing risk management tools to execute tasks using a risk-based approach.
- Understanding and application of various risk management tools, such as 5 Whys, Cause & Effect, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, etc.
- High degree of detailed analytical thinking and problem-solving.
- Research, analyze, and translate information and data into action, results, and recommendations.
- Skilled in relationship management and adept at influencing others through the effective application of emotional intelligence.
- Ability to communicate and work with people at all levels and across organizational boundaries
- Must have a growth mindset to continuous ongoing professional development.
- Bachelor’s degree in statistics, management, business, or related subjects.
- Eight plus years of controls testing and risk management experience
- Eight plus years of working closely with the first line within an organization with a mature risk management and controls testing framework.
- Internal Audit experience is a plus.

Salary
$142k - $175k a year in Brooklyn, NY and Melville, NY.
$118k - $146k a year in Syracuse, NY.
