About us

At National Grid, we light up the world by harnessing the unique strengths of our people. Join us as a PowerFactory Super User to be part of a team that's driving forward the energy transition, creating a brighter, more sustainable future for all.

Unleash your superpower and bring energy to life.

National Grid is hiring a PowerFactory Super User for our Customer and Network Development Team based in our Warwick Head Office.

About the role

PowerFactory is a critical tool used within National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) for conducting Power Systems Analysis, which helps determine the requirements of both the current and future electricity network.

To ensure uninterrupted and efficient operation, it is essential that the PowerFactory software is fully optimised for the analytical needs of NGET.

This responsibility currently lies with the PowerFactory Lead User. However, due to the increasing scope and complexity of the work, there is now a need to establish an additional support role focused on PowerFactory and Power Systems Analysis to assist in delivering this vital function.

What you'll do

  • Liaise with DIgSILENT about problems with PowerFactory:

This involves doing an initial examination of the problem reported. Discussing the issue with the user and collecting any data needed. Then reporting to DIgSILENT in terms that they understand and transferring the data to DIgSILENT by the agreed secure route.

Where the problem needs a patch or new version the super user should provide a workaround that can be used until the fix can be implemented and an update installed.

  • Answer general queries in PowerFactory – For example: load flow convergence, problem solving; support on how to use scripts.
  • Manage the user administration of PowerFactory - (adding/deleting users, archiving of old projects). They would be supported by other members team and the IT support teams in this role to make sure someone is always available, but will always lead on processes and tricky cases.
  • Manage the configuration and scripts in PowerFactory.

There is a mixture of user written and externally supported (usually by DIgSILENT) scripts in PowerFactory.

User written scripts are often the best way for a user to develop a tool that meets their needs. Once they are developed and tested, they need to be managed to give all users access to the same version. The IT department process is too onerous for the management of these scripts. User written scripts become complex and critical to business processes may need to be transferred to external partners to ensure continuity of support.

  • Assist users in improving business process

Providing support on how to do things more efficiently in PowerFactory making of new features (e.g. taking advantage of the parallel processing capabilities)

Assisting user in writing scripts to speed up their work and moving ideas forward to IT projects (or business projects)

  • Support IT projects

IT professionals working on project need support to understand how PowerFactory works and manages data. IT also need be informed on how ET set up and use the data in PowerFactory.

Manage upgrades to PowerFactory, we will continue to need to upgrade PowerFactory on a regular basis to take advantage of new features keep within the support window.

What you'll need

  • Minimum 3-5 years PowerFactory experience
  • Thorough knowledge of DIgSILENT PowerFactory custom scripting
  • In depth understanding of power system networks and power system analysis and modelling across a broad range of areas.
  • Strong understanding of electrical infrastructure investment processes and relevant procedures in relation to network design.
  • Understanding and experience of managing multi-users within a software environment.
  • Experience of building and sustaining relationships within a technically- focussed environment
  • Ability to present detailed technical information in a way understandable to non-technical audiences.

What you'll get

Annual salary of £54,000.00 to £68,000.00 per annum dependent on experience

  • Annual Performance Based Bonus.
  • 26 days annual leave plus eight statutory days.
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave – so long as it’s relevant to your role.
