National Grid is hiring a Lead GIS Engineer - This position is based from our Warwick office however we offer flexible hybrid working options.
Job Purpose
As the Lead Geospatial Engineer at National Grid, you will be instrumental in designing and optimising innovative geospatial data solutions that drive our analytics, operational and regulatory initiatives. Reporting to the Head of Data Engineering & Insight, you will provide technical leadership, mentor a team of geospatial specialists and collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders to deliver cutting-edge, spatially aware data solutions. Your role will involve defining engineering standards, resolving complex challenges and promoting modern GIS platforms and advanced analytics, all while influencing strategic decisions and enhancing geospatial capabilities within our technology ecosystem. Key Accountabilities
- Own, define, and implement scalable geospatial data solutions, ensuring they align with NGED’s architectural standards, data governance principles, and business priorities.
- Lead the adoption of best practices for spatial data processing, storage, and visualisation frameworks.
- Support the Head of Data Engineering & Insight in driving the future roadmap for geospatial data engineering, evaluating new technologies, and fostering innovation to enhance NGED’s spatial data capabilities.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the geospatial engineering team, fostering a culture of continuous learning, technical excellence, and collaboration. Encourage knowledge sharing and professional development to build a high-performing and resilient team.
- Own the development and optimisation of geospatial data pipelines and workflows, ensuring they are automated, maintainable, and cost efficient.
- Promote the adoption of CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as-code for streamlined deployment and operations.
- Champion Agile and DevOps practices within geospatial engineering, ensuring best practices for software development and deployment
- Ensure best practices in geospatial data governance and security compliance are followed, working closely with the Data Governance and Security teams to align with NGED’s regulatory obligations.
- Play an active role in supporting the agile software development lifecycle, collaborating with engineering functions to define, document, implement, and share best practices and standards.
- Lead and guide the team in optimising operational processes to improve efficiency, scalability, and reliability across NGED’s geospatial data landscape.
About You
- Exceptional communicator with outstanding interpersonal skills and stakeholder management experience.
- Strong influencing skills and ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences, clearly and concisely.
- Excels at working with people and developing teams (mentoring, coaching, training, facilitating, and collaborating).
- Eagerness to continually develop self through high-quality training and the latest industry trends, with regular, guided self-reflection and mentoring.
- Strong commercial awareness and prioritisation skills with product management experience.
- Strong experience with GIS tools such as QGIS, ArcGIS.
- Proficiency in Python, SQL, CI/CD.
- Experience with spatial databases such as PostGIS, Oracle Spatial, or SQL Server with geospatial extensions.
- Strong data modelling, database design, and performance optimisation skills for structured and unstructured geospatial data.
- Knowledge and experience of implementing and leading a geospatial data strategy, working with cloud GIS platforms (AWS, Azure, and GCP).
- Knowledge of geospatial data formats (GeoJSON, WMS, WFS, raster, and vector datasets) and relevant APIs for geospatial data integration.
What you'll get
A competitive salary between £80,000 - £90,000 – dependent on capability
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 30% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
