National Grid is hiring a Lead Data Analyst - This position is based from our Warwick office however we offer flexible hybrid working options.
Job Purpose
Join us as a Lead Data Insight Analyst and be at the forefront of transforming data into powerful insights that drive strategic decision-making! Reporting to the Head of Data Engineering & Insight, you will spearhead our analytical capabilities, delivering high-quality, actionable insights that empower our organisation to thrive.
In this dynamic role, you will provide technical leadership within the data insights function, championing best practices in analytics, visualisation, and data storytelling. As a subject matter expert, you will mentor and guide a team of insight analysts, collaborating closely with data engineers, data scientists, and key business stakeholders to turn raw data into meaningful narratives.
Your influence will be pivotal in defining analytical standards and enhancing reporting efficiency, all while fostering a vibrant data-driven culture across the organisation. What you'll do
- Own, define, and implement scalable analytics and reporting solutions, ensuring alignment with business objectives, data governance standards, and best practices in data visualisation and storytelling.
- Support the Head of Data Engineering & Insight in shaping the future roadmap for business intelligence (BI) and analytics, evaluating new tools, technologies, and frameworks to enhance efficiency and insight generation.
- Lead the development and optimisation of dashboards, reports, and self-service analytics capabilities, ensuring they are reliable, secure, and optimised for business users.
- Ensure data insights are actionable and accessible, enabling decision-makers to derive value from data through intuitive visualisation, storytelling, and contextual analysis.
- Mentor and develop the insight analysts, fostering a culture of analytical excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning. Provide coaching to enhance their ability to deliver meaningful insights.
- Collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders to translate complex data requirements into meaningful insights, ensuring analytics solutions effectively support decision-making and operational efficiency.
- Own the selection and adoption of BI and analytics technologies, ensuring alignment with cloud-based platforms and automation best practices to improve scalability and performance.
- Champion best practices in data analysis and reporting, advocating for automation, reproducible workflows, and cloud-first approaches to enhance analytical efficiency and reduce manual effort.
- Monitor data quality, reporting performance, and user engagement, proactively identifying and resolving issues to ensure insights are accurate, timely, and impactful.
- Ensure BI and reporting practices align with data governance and security requirements, working closely with the Data Governance team to maintain compliance and data integrity.
- Own the technical relationship with external BI vendors and solution providers, ensuring third-party solutions meet requirements for scalability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of integration.
- Play an active role in defining and sharing best practices, collaborating with data engineering and data science teams to standardise methodologies, tools and frameworks.
- Lead and guide the team in optimising operational processes to improve efficiency, scalability, and value delivery across analytics initiatives.
- Deputise for the Head of Data Engineering & Insight when delegated, supporting meetings, decision-making, and strategic planning.
- Undertake other duties as required by the Head of Data Engineering & Insight, contributing to the continuous advancement analytics and reporting capabilities.
About you
- Strong decision making ability.
- Exceptional communicator with outstanding interpersonal skills and stakeholder management experience.
- Strong influencing skills and ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences, clearly and concisely.
- Excels at working with people and developing teams (coaching, training, facilitating and collaborating).
- Eagerness to continually develop self through high quality training and the latest industry trends with regular, guided self-reflection and “mentoring”.
- Knowledge and experience of implementing and leading a systems engineering strategy, SDLC strategy, and working with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure and GCP).
- Strong commercial awareness and prioritisation skills with product management experience.
- Act as a SME leader and role model within the delivery community and wider organisation.
- Strong hands-on experience in designing, developing optimising data visualisation, reporting analytical solutions using modern BI tools in cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP) and on-premise environments.
- Proficiency in SQL for querying (and) transforming data, along with experience in scripting languages such as Python or R for advanced analytics.
- Experience with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., AWS Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery, or Databricks) and integrating insights into scalable architectures.
- Deep understanding of self-service analytics, data storytelling dashboard performance optimisation to enhance user experience and decision-making.
- Strong knowledge of data modelling principles, database design, and best practices for structured and unstructured data analysis.
- Experience in Agile methodologies, version control (e.g., Git), and CI/CD practices for analytics development.
- Ability to mentor analysts, fostering a culture of analytical excellence, collaboration continuous learning.
- Proven track record of working with stakeholders to translate business requirements into actionable insights, influencing data-driven decision-making across an organisation.
What you’ll get
A competitive salary between £70,00 – £90,000 dependent on capability
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus of up to 30% of your salary for stretch performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
