Innovation Engineer
Warwick, GB, CV34 6DA
About the role
At National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), we’re at the heart of the energy transition. Our innovation team works hand-in-hand with industry partners, academics, and stakeholders to anticipate the future needs of our transmission network and deliver pioneering solutions. As an Innovation Engineer, you’ll be right at the centre of this work - researching, trialling, and deploying new ideas that make a tangible impact.
We’re growing our Innovation team — and we’re looking for talented Innovation Engineers to help shape the future of the UK’s energy system.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll take ownership of a diverse portfolio of projects, from concept through to delivery, ensuring they drive measurable value for the business. Your role will involve:
- Exploring new ideas and supporting the development of innovation strategies.
- Leading technical research, development, and demonstration projects across areas such as:
- Power system engineering
- Overhead lines and undergrounding technologies
- Protection, control, and automation
- Cyber security and climate change resilience
- Transformers, switchgear, and power electronics
- Civil engineering and construction methods
- Whole energy systems integration
- Building strong relationships across the energy ecosystem - from colleagues to suppliers and external innovators.
- Embedding innovation into business as usual and championing an innovation culture across NGET.
This role is based in Warwick and can be combined with hybrid working from home.
What you'll need
We’re looking for engineers with curiosity, creativity, and a passion for making a difference. You’ll also have:
- A background in innovation, with knowledge of high-voltage or transmission environments.
- Experience developing technology-based solutions and deploying them into operational settings.
- Strong commercial awareness and stakeholder engagement skills.
- The ability to think strategically and define future innovation needs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in project, stakeholder, and supplier management.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
This is more than just a technical role. It’s an opportunity to influence the future of the UK’s energy system, tackle climate challenges head-on, and work on projects that matter. You’ll join a supportive, forward-thinking team with the flexibility of hybrid working and the chance to grow your expertise in a range of disciplines.
What's in it for you?
A competitive salary of £54,000 to £75,000 – dependant on capability
- 26 days annual leave plus eight statutory days
- The option to buy additional or sell holiday days
- Generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
