The Transmission Network Control Centre (TNCC), is on the front line of the electricity transmission system, ensuring safety and system security standards are maintained at all times. 

 

As Control Room Planning Engineer, you will apply your technical expertise and operational understanding to assess Control Room outage deliverability and resolve engineering queries, whilst collaborating closely with our Asset Operations and Operational Planning teams.

 

With accountability for workplan delivery in the control room, you’ll receive plan handovers from Operational Planning for delivery within the Control Room. You’ll allocate resources to operational and safety switching activities and work with Tactical Planners to review and smooth the year ahead plan accordingly to Control Room capacity.  You will play a key role in maximising Control Room throughput and support the business in meeting its strategic objectives.

 

As the network evolves—particularly with the transition to dual Control Room operations and a new SCADA system, you’ll help the team adapt to increasing complexity, digitalisation, and resource demands. Looking ahead, you may have the opportunity to progress toward authorisation as a TNCC Control Person (Safety or Operations), enabling direct involvement in managing network safety and operational decisions within the Control Room environment

 

You’ll be based at our office in Warwick twice a week and this can be combined with hybrid working from home.

 

 

What you'll need

 

With an HNC or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, or considerable industry experience, you’ll ideally have engineering knowledge and experience of operation and planning of the electricity transmission system.

 

You’ll have an understanding of outage planning processes and their impact on system reliability and customer outcomes, as well as knowledge of National Grid’s safety rules and procedures, coupled with strong negotiating and dispute resolution skills.

 

Problem solving skills, the ability to work under pressure, flexibility and prioritisation are also all essential.  Familiarity with digital planning tools, data analysis, and visualisation platforms to support workplan forecasting and decision-making, is also key.

 

You’ll have the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across businesses and be capable of making operational decisions confidently and quickly, whilst maximising safe and efficient throughput.
