National Grid is hiring Connection Engineers for our Customer Connections Team based in our Central region covering West Midlands, East Midlands and East of England.
About the role
As a Connections Engineer, you will be at the heart of a variety of works. You will be working within a multi-disciplinary team, designing and developing to budget and deadline, with safety at the heart of everything you do.
Day-to-day activities will vary throughout the project lifecycle. Some days you may be undertaking surveys in an operational substation, other days you may be in the office, reviewing customer connection applications or tendering submissions from the supply chain. Every day you’ll be making a significant contribution to a greener energy future.
About you
You'll need to be curious and tenacious in your approach with a genuine passion to contribute towards the delivery of projects that will be critical to the UK’s decarbonisation objectives. You will have an Engineering degree or relevant engineering/project management experience in the development or construction of infrastructure projects in utilities or a similar field. You’ll either have chartership or be working towards it with an institute such as the IET. You will have a driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK.
We would also look for you to be able to demonstrate all or some of the following:
Engineering and Design:
- Possesses skilled/expert level knowledge of electrical / civil engineering principles.
- Demonstrates a technical knowledge and understanding of the electricity transmission system and assets.
- Skilled in electrical engineering principles, processes and network design, asset maintenance.
Customer/stakeholder Management:
- Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with customers, stakeholders, suppliers, and contractors.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the National Grid customer base and the connection process.
- Regularly seeks customer feedback to assess satisfaction levels and identify any areas for improvement. Acts on areas for improvement and creates a feedback loop.
- Effectively manages multiple customer/stakeholder/supplier relationships concurrently.
Project Management:
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills in project planning, project delivery and project financial forecasting, management and controls.
- Demonstrate knowledge of UK safety and environmental legislation with regards to development, design and delivery of construction projects.
- Exhibits strong leadership skills and the ability to matrix manage cross-functional teams effectively including contractors.
- Shows expertise in risk management and problem-solving to ensure project success to time, cost, scope and to a high quality.

- A competitive salary of £45,000 - £64,000 dependant on skills and experience
