National Grid is hiring an Ops Trainer in Taunton reporting into our Technical Training Delivery Manager .
As a Ops Trainer you will lead on engaging Operations training courses such as substation access, HV switching and document issue to a range of new and existing staff. Your responsibilities will include not only teaching but also collaborating on the design and development of innovative training programmes that utilise interactive blended learning solutions. You will play a key role in enhancing our training assets and facilities, working closely with subject matter experts to ensure our training meets the evolving needs of our workforce. You’ll deliver training to apprentices, new hires and internal & external operational staff. You will also facilitate assessments and observations such as Trade Tests.

To thrive in this position, you should possess excellent communication and relationship-building skills, along with a background working on the Distribution Network. Experience in coaching or mentoring others is a plus. Successful candidates will receive training to enhance their presentation and training skills.
Your role will cover primarily the South West region, with occasional travel expected to other training centres such as Eakring and Tipton, and operational sites across the UK. An increased amount of travel may be necessary during your initial period of development.
What you'll do
- Deliver quality training in classroom and workshop environments.
- Assist with the design and development of technical and safety training to meet customer requirements.
- Support the maintenance of training products, ensuring compliance with internal quality assurance processes.
- Ensure training products meet relevant safety and technical requirements.
- Interact with technical experts and relevant departments to ensure training is developed to meet necessary standards.
- Review latest technical and safety bulletins to remain knowledgeable on safety training matters.
- Review lesson plans and presentations to ensure sessions are delivered to a high standard.
- Support the team by carrying out observations to identify and implement improvements.
- Ensure training equipment is maintained, calibrated, and tested as necessary.
- Conduct safety walks for areas of responsibility.
- Assess individuals carrying out practical activities to ensure they meet qualification standards.
- Work with the Design and Innovation Team to drive improvements and new products.
- Health & Safety, Safeguarding responsibilities to learners.
- Completion of accurate course reports and assessments documentation
What you'll need
- Technical Qualification - ONC/ HNC or equivalent Electrical Engineering Qualification
- Applicants should have experience of Operational work on the Company’s distribution system and will ideally hold current NGED Operational authorisations.
- Experience working in primary substations compounds, 132KV tower and experience in protection systems.
- Authorisation up to SAP level
- Sound understanding of the Distribution Safety Rules and associated Policies
- Excellent communication and time management / planning skills
- Good degree of IT skills and be conversant with Microsoft PowerPoint
It would be awesome if you had;
- Experience of managing teams or work activities
- Previous training experience, knowledge of coaching of others
- Knowledge of Safeguarding, or working with young adults previously
- NEBOSH certificate / diploma or equivalent safety qualifications

A competitive salary between £53,000 - £64,000 per annum– dependent on capability.
