As System Safety Assurance Engineer, you’ll play a big part in developing learning and driving consistency of operation across Electricity Transmission by planning and undertaking assurance activities, providing insight on the effectiveness of 1st Line Controls.

 

Focussing on the effectiveness of procedures used in National Grid substation sites, and the systems of work used on those sites and Overhead Lines routes, this assurance is required as part of the Tier 2 Management process to ensure compliance with SHES legislation, site security and resilience in the event of emergencies. You’ll provide advice and assist the wider business to implement any necessary corrective actions.

 

Developing and delivering a programme of Tier 2 risk-based assurance, you’ll lead on Tier 2 audits, monitoring, reviewing and producing high quality reports, sharing learning from findings and best practice.  You’ll liaise with Policy teams in NGET to ensure audit findings are implemented into policy driving procedural compliance.

 

Representing the team, you’ll attend key SHES working groups as a system safety subject matter expert to influence improvements in current practices, ensuring information is communicated to the zonal site staff as appropriate. You will also be accountable for accuracy and completeness of the feedback provided to the leadership team NGET business areas following visits to site.

 

You’ll work with the technology lead, to ensure a robust assurance reporting system is fit for purpose, updated and communicated to site management teams for Tier 1 and Tier 2.

 

This role will be covering sites in England and Wales, and your time will be split between home, office and travel to sites.

 

 

What you'll need

 

Qualified to at least HNC in Electrical Engineering or with significant relevant experience, you’ll ideally have a NEBOSH General Certificate.

 

You’ll have expert knowledge and experience of delivering work to the Health & Safety at Work Act, and all Regulations under that relating to management of industrial installations including the Management Regulations, CDM and ESQCR.

 

With a sound understanding of substations and HV cable systems, you’ll have extensive knowledge of National Grid’s Electricity Safety Rules, guidance and supporting National Safety Instructions.

 

Knowledge of current auditing practice, including quality report writing, is essential, as is the ability to communicate effectively to staff at all levels of the organisation, including producing and delivering presentations to leadership teams and/or large teams of NGET staff.

 

You’ll have the ability to convert legislation into practical guidance across NGET site-based teams and have the knowledge to be able to audit staff at all authorisation levels.

 

Ideally, you’ll have a wide range of experience in Overhead Lines and Substations work and/or on HV cable systems, encompassing electrical, mechanical, and telecoms engineering disciplines.

 

A strong understanding of the function of substations, and circuits in the operation of the power system, the asset types found in them, and the risks and consequences on site of asset failure are all key.
