This role forms part of the Strategic Infrastructure Offshore Engineering Team, responsible for supporting the delivery of national infrastructure that is integral to Net Zero.
As a Senior Marine Geotechnical Engineer, you'll give technical input and provide quality management across the portfolio of work. You will support the design, engineering, and delivery of subsea cables, extending to the land interface to the transition joint bay (TJB) and onshore HVDC cable route sections.
As part of the role, you'll manage suppliers to ensure survey data is collected, processed, and supplied to the correct standards and specification. You'll be familiar with industry practices and standards covering the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of geotechnical survey data, working closely with internal and external stakeholders, including survey contractors, consultants, Project Managers, and joint-venture partners.
You will also lead on the implementation and management of workflow and standards within the marine and onshore Geospatial environment. The principal value created by this role is the supervision and management of quality to ensure National Grid and our partners can be highly confident that the products and services provided will result in agreed outcomes.
In this role you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. You'll be flexible to regular travel throughout England and Scotland, depending on the project.
Key accountabilities
- Technical point of contact for the contractor, PM, and wider team on assigned projects in the portfolio.
- Oversite of contractors during land and nearshore geotechnical and survey operations including onsite checks.
- Lead data QC on assigned projects, including assessment of survey data for viability, route development and against specification.
- Provide challenge and review to contractor and consultant documentation, processes, and quality.
- Lead technical discussions relating to scope changes, concessions, or deviations.
- Day-to-day management of client representatives, including project onboarding.
- Lead improvements to specifications, workflows, and processes, including through identifying lessons learned and new technologies.
- Provide technical input into landing options, burial, protection, and routing discussions.
- Proactively promote safe working and full compliance with SHEQ standards.
- Provision of coaching and mentoring to other team members.
- Represent the Offshore Engineering team at internal and external events.
About you

- Experience as a Geotechnical Engineer with experience leading the processing, QC, interpretation, and analysis of geotechnical survey data.
- Experience of geotechnical data acquisition including boreholes in the land and nearshore environments including land drilling rigs, jack-ups and other shallow water platforms.
- Knowledge of subsea power cable landing options such as Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD).
- Experience of creating and reviewing survey plans based on engineering requirements.
- Experience of geotechnical testing, including the requirements for field testing, laboratory analysis, data interpretation and accreditations.
- Experience of interpretation and integration of geotechnical and geophysical datasets.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Marine Science, Geography, Geology, or related field.
- SHEQ qualifications/experience; knowledge of marine and terrestrial geophysical surveys and data; experience of GIS software, including ArcGIS, QGIS or similar software would be a bonus.
What you'll get
A competitive salary between £54,000 - £65,000 – dependent on capability.
