About the role

 

Great Britain's electricity infrastructure is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.

 

Our new Strategic Infrastructure (SI) business unit has been set up to deliver several new major projects, working collaboratively with selected Design & Consenting and Construction partners to design and deliver c£4.5billion of network construction by 2030. 

 

We are looking to onboard four Risk Managers to join the Stragic Infrasturcture programmes.

 

The Onshore Programme Management Office (PMO) has a significant role to play in supporting delivery of these projects, including the risk management team through the robust development and upkeep of sufficiently detailed risk and opportunity registers, risk modelling and utilisation of QCRA and QSRA techniques.

 

Eastern Green Link 2 & 3 are multi-billion pound projects (c.£10b), both of which are being delivered via Joint Venture between National Grid and SSEN. Both projects are focusing on the development of Eastern HVDC Subsea Links which will connect Scotland and England to support the transfer of renewable electricity to key UK centres of demand.

 

The Project Services Function has a significant role to play in supporting delivery of these projects, including the risk management team through the pro-active management of the risk process, the robust development and upkeep of sufficiently detailed risk and opportunity registers, risk modelling, utilisation of QCRA and QSRA techniques and the management of the non-project held contingency which will require robust commercial analysis and management to ensure full recovery is achieved.

 

These roles are on a hybrid basis, with regular travel to sites across the UK.

About you

 

We are looking for a Risk Management professional with significant experience in large construction programmes, knowledge of modern but pragmatic practice. In addition, the interpersonal and leadership skills to help develop the Risk team but also create strong relationships with the project teams. In this role you will combine functional best practices with the behaviours and culture needed to effect change in a large diverse organisation.

  • Experience in developing or implementing risk management activity on high-value programmes / portfolios: >£500m
  • Knowledge and experience of project, programme and portfolio risk management practices and the communication of risk and opportunity data through effective reporting tools.
  • Knowledge and experience of blending project and risk management approaches and aligning the two.
  • Experience of using a range of risk management digital tools and their successful application including robust risk registers, QCRA and QSRA deliverables.
  • Experience of reporting to business assurance / risk and compliance committees.
  • Experience of risk management practices and information with other functions and reports to improve integration and risk culture.
  • Significant experience in leading risk workshops and reviews to ensure risks are actively managed, monitored and reported on.
  • Ability to bring creative and innovative new approaches to risk management in a way that delivers lasting improvements. 
  • Professional qualification in risk management. 
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, numerate, analytical, and articulate with strong report writing capability to present a concise and compelling statement to assure the board or elicit action and change.
  • Solid knowledge and experience in the disciplines, integration and alignment of project and enterprise risk management.
  • Awareness and understanding of assurance planning and execution.

 

What you'll do

 

  • Facilitate risk identification and identify potential risks that could impact project objectives with internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders. Evaluate the likelihood and impact of identified risks.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation plans to minimise the impact of risks on project outcomes
  • Develop and maintain the project risk management plan and risk register in alignment with SI standard operating procedures
  • Work with the Partners to identify Package Risk and to make sure these are correctly captured and integrated into the SI Risk Management Software
  • Use quantitative methods. (e.g., Monte Carlo simulations) to inform programme and cost forecasting.
  • Provide risk inputs into schedule and cost contingency modelling, working closely with planners and commercial managers.
  • Recommend and track appropriate mitigation strategies, ensuring that residual risks are understood and accepted.
  • Ensure risk-related decisions are documented and appropriately escalated.
  • Generate regular risk reports for senior management, steering committees, and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement in risk practices across the organisation.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to project team members and Partners on risk management processes and best practices.

A competitive salary up to £80,000 dependent on capability.
