Portfolio Engineer

We’re looking for a passionate Portfolio Engineer to join our Commercial and Portfolio team! You will work within a multi-disciplined team to outperform against National Grid’s regulatory commitments on network reliability outcomes and incentives. You will support the end-to-end management of a given asset-specific portfolio by ensuring that investments within the portfolio are managed to cost and programme, driving the timely development of projects through the pre-construction phases, including sanction, tendering/procurement process, contract award, handover to delivery, site installation, commissioning, and close-out. Additionally, they will provide a key commercial interface point for Asset Management teams regarding the asset-specific portfolio.
This role is Peripatetic, and we encourage a hybrid working approach, although we’re happy to discuss any additional flexibility in working patterns or requirements that you feel could help to make this job work for you!
What You'll Do
- Support the investment process for asset portfolio.
- Lead tracking and reporting on investment and asset portfolio cost, programme and other KPIs performance in line with regulatory requirements and outperformance targets.
- Unit cost management for asset portfolio including maintaining a live narrative on cost performance for portfolio of investments.
- Support the completion of Regulatory Reporting Packs (RRPs) and the eventual close-out of RIIO-T2 for their specific asset investment portfolio.
- Facilitate the financial closure of projects, including the capitalisation of capital expenditures (CAPEX).
- Provide a key commercial and investment process interface for Asset Management teams on their specific portfolio.
- Ensure that all required governance documentation across all project phases is completed to the highest possible standard and in a timely manner.
- Ensure that core data for their portfolio of investments is maintained to the highest levels of quality and accuracy.
- Deliver training, coaching and support to other engineers in the team.
- Ensure that investment governance is maintained throughout all phases and lead on any required sanction, re-sanction or closure for their portfolio.
- Act as a central liaison point for interaction with Contract & Commercial teams and Delivery Performance teams for their specific asset portfolio(s).
- Lead on change control and management for asset portfolio ensuring regulatory justifications for changes are completed and approved where required.
- Provide accurate and timely financial forecasts for portfolio of investments during the QRF process.
What You'll Have
- Degree or equivalent in engineering discipline, or relevant experience
- Proficient knowledge in Contract Management and demonstrated Commercial acumen.
- Proficient understanding of management of contingency across all project / investment phases.
- Proficient understanding of National Grid’s financial forecasting and control processes.
- Proficient understanding and demonstrable working knowledge of key business processes and governance.
- Knowledge of the Electricity Transmission System and the transmission assets.
- Understanding of RIIO mechanisms and the way that National Grid delivers revenue under the regulatory framework.
- Knowledge of the application of CDM, Safety and Environmental Regulations.
- Proficient project management skills including management of time, cost, safety and risk.
- A stakeholder-centric approach to delivering a high-quality output
- Proficient understanding and demonstrable working knowledge of business processes and governance.
- Demonstrable experience of stakeholder management
- Advanced business writing and communication skills
