Unlock your Superpower working on High Voltage Switchgear to support the efficient power flow of the HV Transmission System.

 

We’re looking for an engineer who has a background in working with high voltage switchgear to support variable scale high priority projects to ensure our fleet of switchgear assets are available to serve the power flows across England and Wales.

 

As the Associate Transmission Network Engineer, you’ll be responsible for interpreting asset performance data, providing first-line engineering support to operational staff, acting as the Technical Secretary for engineering investigations, coordinating technical assessments, conducting asset condition assessments and ensuring completion of follow-up investigations.

 

You’ll play a key role in incident analyses to support health reviews, recommending performance improvements and offering assurance on the status of transmission engineering. Your expertise will be crucial in supporting decisions about equipment and their suitability for service, including balancing demand and risk, serving as the focal point for the OEM collaboration and ensuring all asset faults are supported through to resolution within specified timescales. Additionally, you will manage external stakeholder relationships, whilst working closely with consultants and internal teams to drive consistency and value engineering. Your contributions will also be vital in assisting with the regular Asset Health Reviews, ensuring the reliability and performance of our critical infrastructure. This role requires national travel across England and Wales.

 

This role is based out of one of our National Grid offices, and we’d hope to see you at least two days per week but you’re welcome to be in the office more often if that would work best for you. What You'll Do

  • Assist the ‘NG Principal Designer or representative’ (i.e. ‘Designer) where appropriate and dependant upon experience. To provide detailed engineering support in own field of expertise, to ensure cost effective and appropriate option selection for project detailed design and delivery, including coordination and resolution of technical issues from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support the development of standardised solutions for asset interventions.
  • Technically manage external contracts, contractor and stakeholder relationships and direct framework consultants, to drive consistency and ‘value engineering’, working in partnership with wider NG teams as appropriate.
  • Provide the design, with authorised support from a Transmission Network Engineer on a risk-based approach to the Occupiers Representative or Project Managers, so that projects can proceed to the next stage and to eventual commercial service.
  • Working towards authorisation to enable the ability to discharge the roles required by the Network Engineering Manager across Primary and Secondary Technologies.
  • Provide technical input and advice, dependant upon experience to the wider business by providing 1st and 2nd line technical support on secondary technologies.
  • Author, develop, advise on, implement and maintain Work Specifications (both maintenance and refurbishment) as appropriate and ensure all lessons learned and best practice are incorporated as required.
  • Coordinate technical investigations through the role of Technical Secretary, within scope of competency and progress to completion subsequent engineering investigations.
  • Undertake audit and incident analysis in support of health of engineering and commissioning reviews and recommend performance improvements and providing assurance on the status of transmission engineering Version 2.0 June 2018.
  • Work seamlessly with Development and Delivery teams to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of the NARMs Programme, whilst ensuring the execution of National Grid governance requirements.

What You'll Have

  • Knowledge of site work in the area of engineering expertise, including proficient understanding of procedural requirements – particularly associated with NARMs schemes.
  • Knowledge of design, extension and lifetime management of assets associated with area of engineering expertise.
  • Understanding of ET Operations Policy and Procedure.
  • Working knowledge of NG Safety Rules and National Safety Instructions.
  • Working towards/appropriate competency/authorisations in line with Transmission Procedures & NG Electricity Transmission Safety Rules.
  • Demonstrable increase of knowledge across 2 x Secondary Technologies.
  • Experienced in effective communication skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations to multi-disciplined teams / audiences.
  • Knowledge of negotiation/contract management and influencing at all levels.
  • Knowledge of building and maintain relationships internally and externally with key stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 and the application of Quality Management Systems within NARMs projects.
