Lead Quantity Surveyor

Location:

GB

Division:  Offshore Delivery
Job Type:  Full Time
Requisition Number:  68833
Department:
Job Function:  Capital Project Delivery

About the role

Great Britain's electricity infrastructure is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.

To help drive efficiency in the green energy transition

This is a role for an experienced Quantity Surveyor who wants additional responsibility and the chance to work on high-value, complex schemes.

You’ll be providing commercial and contractual support to project teams on large-scale infrastructure projects, helping ensure that we deliver our projects in the most commercially effective way.

This is not a project specific role; you’ll drop in and out of projects as required. You’ll work on some of the most exciting projects in green energy, providing crucial commercial guidance across numerous schemes at any given time.

The role could provide a stepping-stone into management. You will be the link between management and more junior Quantity Surveyors and you may also be responsible for the line management of a small team.

About you

What we do isn’t just important – it’s essential. That’s why we look to recruit experts in their field. In this case, we’re looking for someone who:

  • Methodical and process driven, you are good at gathering data and information to accurately assess an issue or event. You can analyse complex disputes to arrive at a reasoned decision and are flexible enough to pick up new challenges at short notice.
  • You can deal confidently with people at all levels of business including management, succinctly presenting facts and providing contractual advice. You can mentor others and develop their skills to build the overall capability of a team.
  • You are unafraid of making independent decisions using your own skill and judgement, and willing to challenge and question the decisions made by others.
  • You have extensive experience of quantity surveying and a strong understanding of NEC contracts (Option A, C and E) & FIDIC contracts.
  • Ideally you have experience on infrastructure projects, but this isn’t essential. You might have a contractor or consultant background, for example.
  • You are able to travel to site as required, and have the flexibility to work from home, a National Grid office, or site.

What you'll do

  • Taking the lead in reviewing entitlements and assessing the time and cost impact of complex compensation events.
  • Ensuring junior team members comply with contractual obligations in the payment application process.
  • Ensuring your project’s forecasts are robust and challenging the project team in their compilation.
  • Taking charge of the effective pre-contract and post-contract responsibilities of a large portfolio of works, with support from the Contracts and Commercial Manager.
  • Providing sound and reasoned advice to project teams, to assist in the resolution of any complex disputes.
  • Ensuring that across your portfolio of works, contracts are managed effectively and the relevant contractual procedures are followed.
  • When appropriate, challenging decisions made by the project team to resolve contractual disputes in a timely manner.
  • Helping your project team develop and maintain cost forecasts.
  • Attending contract risk reviews and ensuring the project team is employing strong risk management techniques to accurately reflect project risks.
  • Playing a key role in ensuring project teams are compliant with National Grid governance processes.
  • Building strong relationships with a range of stakeholders, including Project Directors, Contracts and Commercial Managers, contractors, and colleagues in procurement and regulation teams.
  • Facilitating good communication between stakeholders. Communicating succinctly and consistently, reaching out to senior stakeholders for assistance when needed.
  • Possibly taking responsibility for reviewing and managing junior members of staff on smaller projects.
  • Supporting and managing others in procurement events.
  • Leading on the commercial assessment of tenders.
  • Advising on the most suitable procurement route. Leading negotiations on contract deviations, depending on the nature of the contract. Suggesting post-contract amendments to deliver the best value for National Grid.
  • Developing relationships with our regulation team to support any submissions made to Ofgem with regard to funding for our schemes.
  • Working with the procurement team to ensure internal processes are adhered to as well as procurement processes. Providing support to the Contracts and Commercial Manager, deputising when necessary to sign-off decisions required as part of our internal governance processes.

What you'll get

A competitive salary between £61,500 - £74,000 – dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
