The Insights team has the vision of framing, directing, and interpreting world class analysis to inform and influence the business and industry as we move towards a net zero energy system. The Strategic Insights Manager will lead a team of Insights Leads.
The purpose of this role is to lead on the strategic framing of energy analysis, and the development and delivery of thought leadership across the NESO centred around scenario modelling for the future of energy. To provide insight into changes affecting the future energy system that inform strategy development, decision making and lead the debate internally and externally.
This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
Key Accountabilities
- Work with the Head of Energy Insights & Analysis to transform the team to a CoE for Scenario, Sensitivity and Forecast Development – this will include researching best practice; defining the scope, deliverables and value of the CoE; undertaking gap analysis against desired future state; stakeholder management around this process; developing and managing the transformation plan.
- Accountable for the development of the strategic framework for NESO’s scenarios, sensitivities and forecasts, including the Future Energy Scenarios documents, and drafting of clear and consistent narratives that responds within this framework. Ensure this framework is developed in collaboration with others across NESO.
- Act as the EIA lead, working with the cross-functional Strategy & Policy programme management and stakeholder engagement specialists, on the EIA team’s workplan and stakeholder engagement activities. Ensure work plans and timelines will meet the needs of internal and external customers who use EIA outputs in downstream processes, and work with Strategy & Policy function colleagues to ensure coordinated delivery and ownership of thought leadership topics.
- Manage the EIA team’s relationships with key stakeholders such as government and the Regulator, ensuring that the team meets subsequent obligations.
- Work collaboratively with the Energy Analysis teams to frame analysis and deliver evidence based strategic thinking on gas, electricity, hydrogen and other fuels. Ensure that messages are relevant, communicated clearly, in a timely manner and targeted at the right audience. Ensure that information and analysis is fed into the scenario development process, so scenarios are as relevant and accurate as possible and consider both policy and broad market perspectives.
- Lead and shape the debate with a broad range of stakeholders on the future of energy, challenging views internally and externally. Work collaboratively with others across NESO to deliver targeted and relevant engagement campaigns on the future of energy (eg ‘thought leadership’ strategy / policy notes) publishing relevant information that meets stakeholder requirements and legislative / licence / contractual obligations.
- Engage internally and externally at a range of levels to understand current levels of understanding, desired levels of understanding, and to then develop the evidence base for thought pieces and communicate the resulting messages in order to influence readers’ views.
- Work collaboratively with the Energy Analysis teams to deliver internal (eg to media relations, senior management and the Exec team) and external (eg to DESNZ, Ofgem and ministers) briefing notes on energy sector developments.
- Help to identify and drive improvements to the team’s processes, data sources and outputs.
- Own the process that feeds outputs from the Strategy & Policy teams and other teams across the NESO into the insight, analysis, and thought leadership plan.
About you
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to consider strategic frameworks and concepts, and how changes to these will drive real world impact
- Ability to take quantitiative and qualitative information and convert it into insights and analysis
- Experience of communicating with, and influencing, internal and external stakeholders at a range of levels
- Experience across gas and electricity markets, with detailed understanding in at least one, and an understanding of policy issues facing the industry
- Ability to work with a wide range of people to drive forward delivery
- Project management and planning skills to ensure a forward timetable for team activities and that deadlines are met whilst ensuring high quality.
- Ability to translate complex information into easily understandable messaging
- An inquisitive mind with the ability to join the dots
About what you’ll get
A competitive salary between £60,000 – 75,000 – dependent on experience and capability.

About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)
In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.
The ESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.
The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.
